The Railways have finally come up with a new
technology -- water mist system -- to deal with fires on train which
have claimed many lives in the past.
The high-pressure water mist system with an efficient cooling effect
will upgrade the Railways' fire-fighting mechanism, said a official
involved with the Railway Disaster Management Cell.
The new system is considered to be very effective in extinguishing
fires and will be fitted in the accident relief trains (ART).
"Now all our ARTs will be equipped with the water mist system as
part of our upgradation of fire-fighting mechanism," said the
official.
"In case of fire, the extinguishing agent is atomised to a fine mist
by being forced at high pressure through special nozzles in the
affected area. The huge surface area of the innumerable tiny
droplets is able to quickly absorb energy from the fire," said the
official.
The Railways also have a team of experts to support rescue and
relief arrangements. "We have a specialised disaster response team
and we are upgrading it by providing more sophisticated equipment,"
said the official.
