Repeated update failures hidden

When repeated failures for 3 updates started in mid-October, I changed auto-update to download-but-ask-to-install. Mid-November, I turned auto-update back on and now there are repeated failures for 6 updates. I am concerned by repeated install attempts and failures. Recently had a crash. I used the restore disks to put back to factory settings. I can not do any updates. The computer kept restarting. It is an AMD 2500. 1 gig memory. Hey, anyone have any ideas why SP 2 won't install. It went through the downloading process, restarted the system, and tried to continue the install, ran 2 hours with 0 progress. Updated Vista to SP2, and can't boot up.

I've been running Vista on Service Pack 1 for some time, and tonight I tried for the second time to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 for x64 systems (KB948465).
