Its very simple to create partition while installing the linux.
But if you already have other operation system existing
and then and you want to create space for installing linux
there is risk unless you already have 1 free partition on
which you can install linux.
I Use Ubuntu which comes with LiveCD That means
without installing linux your GNOME GUI is available
by booting from the CD and you have the tool for
partitioning which will help you perform partitioning.
If you are installing linux for the first time please
use the hard disk which do not have any data.
Allow linux to format and install on complete
HDD and it will create its required partitions.
So there are many solutions to your problem
but please elaborate.
You can create partition after installation but then there
are chances that you may corrupt your existing installtion.
Its better to plan beforehand your partitions.
Linux would not need more than 5GB for its installation.
Hence your root ie "/" partition should be 5GB and you
do not touch it post installation and rest of the space in the
Disk can be organized latter on.
