It was a fantastic ride today. The Harohalli - Jigani stretch is
lovely. It's very scenic and offers plenty of scope for hill training as
well. There's a relentless stretch of uphill for a few kilometers in
between, and someone's set up a shop selling cold butter milk at the end of
that stretch, just perfect! We had some interesting company on the ride,

I'd love to join. I've done the Sarjapur -> Attibele several times in
the past but have never ventured beyond. Should be interesting.

the lady at the buttermilk shop told me that a bear had attacked a
person on this road three days back.

No need for the confusion. SPD is for MTB shoes [2 hole], and SPD SL
is for road bike shoes [3 hole].

You can use MTB pedals on road bikes too.

Others are Speedplay, Cranks, Look etc which are not so commonly
available.

Rekha and I are planning to join up for a part of this ride - we will
park the car near BNP circle and ride across to Kaglipura on
Kanakapura Road and join the group there for the loop to Harohalli and
around BNP. This will be shorter by about 20 Km.

Is the start at Sarakki gate (Merida Jn) at 5:30 am???
