Starting with a short intro. I am Dipankar, a daily biker to
office. I have been riding about 20-30 kms daily for the past 1.5 yrs.
I had recently been to the Tour Of Nilgiris (TFN)'s warmup ride
initiated by Yogesh. Well till then I was not aware of the TFN ride.
Today when I tried registering on the website of TFN, it displayed a
message that registrations are full. :( .. That they can accomodate
only 70 riders whereas 260+ people had already registered. Well, need
not mention, that was quite disappointing.
That was the time when I and Bibhushan decided to put up a
discussion with all those interested in the ride but are in queue for
TFN.
What if we plan a similar long ride on a similar route in the
month of December/January? Away from media and fully self
sponsored... :).
Anyhow, we will surely be finding ways to arrange support cars,
accommodation and all other necessities.
For this, first we need to know how many would like to participate
in a 10 day cycling around a similar route of TFN in the month of
December/January.
Feel free to put across any queries that you may have and we will
try to clarify in the best possible way. We are flexible on the dates
as yet but would prefer it to match with new year celebrations.
Good Idea dude!!
If I may suggest:
Maybe Tail TFN with a 2 day lag. So if TFN starts on 15, you start on
17
And use the same route and same hotels to stay.
Cheers,
Ashish

Agreed, and have stages.... If some can't participate in the entire
'tour', can ride days they think will suit them best... Am game for
atleast 3+ stages (depending on how many days I am given leave)
Super idea!

Do count me in. I had left a PM to dipankar yesterday confirming my
participation.
Couple of thoughts on this
- I agree with Venkat on flexi participation.
- Can we define this tour as touring the nilgiris rather than
following TFN. ie., shall we be open to very minor modifications to
the route? I would be thrilled to go till ooty->coonor->mettupalaym
and head back through kotagiri->ooty->masinagudi->mysore. Touching
mettupalayam is very important to me because that makes me touch the
end of nilgiris
- Providing options put up tents will make this interesting
- If you are all ok with the above, I have created an excel to make
the planning easier. Pls take a look and mail me back for updations
and additions. I will posting the link as a follow up post

- I have added few who have confirmed already. Feel free to send in
change requests (CR - sounds familiar!!) to the file format
- I have shared for editing with some. Please start adding in your
blue mates! (Make sure names are unique)
- Others pls verify whether your name is present in the excel and post
your participation requests by providing all the details mentioned in
the excel
We have to decide the below aspects quickly and freeze the itenary
(not participants)
1. Various legs (segments of the tour) - Same as TFN
Day 1 - Bangalore - Mysore 136.79 km
Day 2 - Mysore - Hassan 118.80 km
Day 3 - Hassan - Madikeri 111.22 km
Day 4 - Madkeri - Irupu 79.77 km
Day 5 - Irupu - Rest Day
Day 6 - Irupu - Sultanbathery 69.56 km
Day 7 - Sultanbathery - Ooty 90.60 km
Day 8 - Ooty - Mysore 124.58 km (Mysore to Bangalore by bus)
2. Exact dates of these legs - I would advice early winter because
monsoons would be painting the nature green and this paint wades away
as the winter days pass by ( Lush green flora will turn brown and
lifeless towards end of the winter)
3. We have to decide the dates keeping in mind that many will have
other plans (with famly) for important dates like new year and
christmas

Folks,
While i'm writing up the report of my Hoysala trail, here's my lessons
learnt.
1. Cycling for ~100K each day for 4days is a lot different than 120K on
one day a week.
2. Support vehicles are a must (luckily i didn't need one).
3. It's amazing fun & addictive :)
4. All it matters is the WILL
Here are some routes for the November/December rides:
1. Hoysala tour: 2d to 6d, based on the interest
2. Malnad tour: Chickmagalur -> Sringer -> Agumbe ... so on. I did this
route, sitting in a car, at the end of my Hoysala trail. This route is a
real feast and nature at it's best. But the climbs over 5/6 days will be
challenging. Probably we can do it at our pace.
3. Bangalore 'durga' trails: Covering Sawan Durga, Devarayana Durga,
Kabbal Durga, Chenna Rayana Durga and others...
4. Hampi trail: Hampi, Badami, Aihole & Pattadkal etc., (I'm planning to
drive here in December :) )
But anyways now is the time to start planning for these trips. Any route i'm
in !!
Cheers,
Pramod

Or, for that matter, why not replicate the model in other parts of
India? Why give the Nilgiris so much importance? A week-long Tour de
Konkan, for instance, has ample possibilities. It could start at (say)
Karwar and end in Mumbai. Or vice versa. The ~700km route could be a
mix of ghats and coastal roads, and NH17 can be largely avoided. The
ideal time would be December-January. If participants put in Rs 1000
each by way of registration fees, and we get 50 entries, I don't think
the lack of official sponsors will be felt so much. But it'll be good
to rope in a Gatorade or Red Bull, or even (sigh) Pepsi/Coke. I'm sure
those based in Delhi could work out a "Tour de Himalaya" on similar
lines.
Pramod,
While entering the information in the form you had commented
"1/3rd of this route is almost a city drive (Blr->Mys->Has). So can we
look at alternative routes "
You are correct. I too felt the same way. The TFN team might have done
this because the Ghats starting from hassan->Madikeri->Sultan Bathery-
>Ooty will give them a much larger coverage of Wester Ghats. But they
cannot drive upto Hassan and start because that will rob the
excitement of flagging off the tour from Bangalore
I too do not want to miss the ghats between Hassan till Medikere,
Hence I will be joining this (TFN like) tour from day 3 ie., starting
from Hassan. I will drive up to Hassan the previous evening and with
this I will be saving my 2 days leave for other rides! Feel free to
join me for driving up to Hassan
cheers,
Vivek

We got a good number of responses for the proposed ride. :)
Current participants are as listed below..
1. R. Venkatachalam
2. Ashish
3. Dipankar Paul
4. Vivek S
5. Naveen P
6. Kiran Kumar Immidi
7. venkatesh avula
8. MITR
9. Pramod Bhardwaj (Honda City).
Well that's a good number to start with!!! :)
Pramod, thanks for the support car. I am personally volunteering to take
turns to drive the car during the cycling trip... :). This way we can avoid
the need for a dedicated driver. Added to this, I am expecting a few more
ride members to volunteer for the driver's job.
Based on popularity demand, I think we may need to shorten the trip.
I am proposing the tour dates to be from *25th till 31st December or 1st
January*... During this period, 25th is a holiday, 26th and 27th are
saturday and sunday. Hence we will have to apply leave for 4 days. 28th to
31st. Moreover, certain companies allow leave on 31st or 1st. This can add 1
more day to the trip time lines.
Another option is to start the trip on *December 18th(Friday) evening and
enjoy till 27th (Sunday)*.. Working participants may need to apply leave
from 21st to 24th December.
Because of the reduction in trip length, I feel that we can take a night bus
to mysore or Hassan and then start the trip from there next morning..
Night 0 - Bangalore - Mysore - (By Night Bus)
Day 1 - Mysore - Hassan 118.80 km
Day 2 - Hassan - Madikeri 111.22 km
Day 3 - Madkeri - Irupu 79.77 km
Day 4 - Irupu - Sultanbathery 69.56 km
Day 5 - Sultanbathery - Ooty 90.60 km
Day 6 - Ooty - Mysore 124.58 km (Mysore to Bangalore by bus)
Since we still have 3 days in hand after this (Provided we take the 18th to
27th Dec), based on the team stamina, we can have a small diversion in Ooty
and take the following route..
Ooty->coonor->Mettupalyam(End of blue
mountain)->kotagiri->ooty->masinagudi->nanjangudu->Mysore
Let me know your feedback at the earliest. We need to arrange for the stay,
and plan the trip accordingly...
Pramod, thanks again for your support car. Let me know your availability for
the mentioned dates.. Vivek, thanks a lot for all the assistance that you
are providing me for organising this trip..
People can register themselves by filling the form available through the

Guess What Guys!!!.. *I got shortlisted for TFN*!! :).. But I will be
dropping it.. That's because anyway we are planning for a similar ride for
within 3000 rs whereas TFN is charging a whooping 18000 rs for the similar
route !!!!...
Hoping to make our Nilgiris and Blue mountain ride a GREAT Success!!! :)
Those who wish to join up for part of the tour or the whole tour may
register by filling the form by clicking on the link given below
Currently most of the participants have agreed for *19th till 27th
December*for the ride..
The agreed upon plan for the trip has been updated as given below..
*Day 0 - By bus to Hassan (Night journey on 18th, Friday, so that the ride
can directly start with mountain rides)
Day 1 - Hassan - Madikeri 111.22 km
Day 2 - Madkeri - Irupu 79.77 km
Day 3 - Irupu - Sultanbathery 69.56 km
Day 4 - Sultanbathery - Ooty 90.60 km
Day 5 - Ooty and Surrounding places
Day 6 - Ooty - Mysore 124.58 km (Mysore to Bangalore by bus)*
A Possible Diversion is the blue mountain trail (Depending on team stamina
and availability of time)
Ooty->coonor->Mettupalyam(End of blue
mountain)->kotagiri->ooty->masinagudi->nanjangudu->Mysore

Dipankar,
That is really great that you have decided to stick with the
renegades :-)
now that dates have been decided, can we start working out the
nittygritties?
Below are some of them that come to my mind
1. Bookings for night stay
2. Camping details
3. Support vehicle
4. Drivers along the route
5. Things that all riders should carry
6. Things that will be chipped in by others and hence each one need
not bring
Guys,
Pls enrich the list above
BTW how was the Nandi ride?
Cheers,
Vivek

Vivek, Thanks a lot for all the initiatives you have been taking..:) Thats
been of great help.. I was also about to send the similar list across to
all. Now that you have already initiated the task, let's carry it
forward....
Booking for night stay has to be finalized once *all the participants agree
on the exact dates at all places and to stay for hotels* and an initial
amount is collected from all. I hope that an initial participation fee of
2000/- per head will help in booking up the hotel rooms.. I hope all are ok
with sharing rooms.
Now since many were proposing to stay in tents, we may need to look for
options of borrowing and carrying tents right from Bangalore. Let me know if
anyone has an idea of where to get the tents from.
Next, let me know if anyone has an idea as to where a dedicated driver can
be searched for and what could be the amount for the 8 days driving.. The
driver needs to drive slow and keep up with the last person of the group..
If the group agrees, then the team mates can take turn to drive the car.
This will ensure rest for the driving participant and saving on the driver
cost...
Some riders are already volunteering to bring repair kits and medikits. But
we still need to make a detail list of the items that we need to carry in
each category. Any one can propose the list. We can add to the list as the
necessities come up.. :)
But there is something which is bothering me... *Why isn't a single lady on
the list??*.. Well, I keep hearing that there is nothing the girls can't do.
So why don't some girls also participate? I personally guarantee the
security of all the ladies.. :) Let's see if some girls come forward... :)..
We need to keep the arrangement for support car and Hotel reservation /
tenting on priority. But since we are finding that people are still adding
up to the list, I will prefer to wait another 10 days, till oct 31st to
decide on the possible final list of participants..
We need to decide on the food, medical and Repair kits on second priority.
All current participants, *Please confirm whether the dates ranging from
December, 18th night till 27th evening is fine*. Many have to apply for
leaves well in advance.. You may need to *apply for leaves from 21st to 24th
only*..
Anyhow, the Nandi trip was good one.. :) But it was not a test of stamina
and endurance. It was more of a fun ride. :) We did face a few challanges.
One of the guys fell and had to get 7 stitches below the chin. The group of
two then returned back to Bangalore. One member in a separate group of 3
faced a flat tyre. His team had to spend an hour running around for repair
shops...:(. Finally we couldn't make it till the top. We returned from the
base of Nandi.
Anyhow, as the saying goes, *All's well that ends well*. We enjoyed the
ride.. :)
Then I decided to push my limits. Monday I am again going for Nandi and this
time planning to leave from Bangalore by 4am. Hoping to make it through to
the top. Hence it will be a kind of back to back 2 days of 110 km each. A
good warmup for the Nilgiris ride :)
*All current participants, this is a request that all of you try to put
atleast 1 hr for cycling and join up for long rides with various teams on
weekends*.. Else, it will be very tough to climb the hills during the tour..
Those who wish to join up for part of the tour or the whole tour may
register by filling the form by clicking on the link given below

Thanks for your contibution.!!! But don't feel bad, coz the route which you
have proposed is for most places a city ride or flat surface ride... Eg:-
from bangalore to mysore/ bandipur and on return leg, from ancheti to
bangalore. This makes almost half the distance on flat roads.
But if you take a look at the terrain map from the above link, you will find
that most of the currently planned ride is on western ghats / hilly rides..
Let me know what you feel.
Other participants, please look into the route plan from the link provided
above and let me know your feedback on the same.
The current plan for the trip is as given below..
Day 0 - By bus to Hassan (Night journey on 18th, Friday, so that the ride
can directly start with mountain rides after a warmup ride..)
Day 1 - Hassan - Madikeri 111.22 km
Day 2 - Madkeri - Irupu 79.77 km
Day 3 - Irupu - Sultanbathery 69.56 km
Day 4 - Sultanbathery - Ooty 90.60 km
Day 5 - Ooty and Surrounding places
Day 6 - Ooty and Surrounding places
Day 7 - Ooty - Mysore 124.58 km (Mysore to Bangalore by bus)
Total distance 650+ kms..
Anyhow, thanks a lot for your input. Keep pitching in ideas. Lets see what
all differences we can make and make the ride much better.!!!

We need to finalize the dates for the trip at the earliest so that we can
apply for the leave. *Requesting all participants to individually confirm
whether the duration of December 19th till December 27 is fine for the trip*..
The current plan is as given below.
18th Dec - By bus to Hassan (Night journey on 18th, Friday, so that the ride
can directly start with mountain rides after a warmup ride..)
19th Dec - Hassan - Madikeri 111.22 km
20th Dec - Madkeri - Irupu 79.77 km
21st Dec - Irupu - Sultanbathery 69.56 km
22nd Dec - Sultanbathery - Ooty 90.60 km
23rd Dec - Ooty and Surrounding places 70 kms
24th Dec - Ooty and Surrounding places 60 kms
25th Dec - Ooty - Mysore 124.58 km (Mysore to Bangalore by bus)
26th Dec - Morning reach back to bangalore.
We are keeping one day in buffer in case the team decides for some

circumstances.
It is anyway guaranteed that we will be back by 27th positively to
Bangalore.
Total distance 650+ kms.. + distance covered by Bus..
Requesting everyone to please *confirm the dates by 21st afternoon*...
