Long back we had discussion and almost decided that Rameshwaram
(Dhanushkodi) will be the best place to watch Annular Solar Eclipse (ASE) on
15th Jan 2010.
I think now is the time to plan for it. Within 1-2 days train tickets will
be open to book (60 days prior).
Has anyone has the plan for it? Where to stay? etc...
My friends father is working in Kalpakkam (80km south from Chennai). Hope
most you know it is famous for Nuclear Power Plant. His father will retire
in less than a year. Before that he could get us the passes to visit the
plant itseems!
I have an idea to visit it and also ASE in Rameshwaram.
If you have any plan please share with me. I need to tell him the details
few weeks before so that he can arrange for the visit.
*I searched for some time about the train routes. Some of points i got.*
1) No direct train between Bangalore and Rameshwaram (RMM).
2) Distance between blr-RMM and chennai-RMM are almost same! Journey will be
around 11-13 hours.
3) There are trains between Chennai and RMM.
4) Frm Blr, it is better to go to Madurai and from there to RMM (if we want
to go directly).
5) Madurai-RMM distance is 173km (around 3-4 hours journey).
Based on above points/constraints and dates, what will you suggest?
Hello All, What are the plans for the ASE-2010; location, logistics and dates? The optimum time for booking tickets (60 days advance) is getting over now. We havent even had a discussion on what place we've finalized.
I personally would now like to join (after re-considering my interest) for the eclipse, but all depending on getting leaves from work. Let us finalize the location within this week. Those having researched on this please let us know. Thanking You. Amar.

IIT Madras Astronomy Club will be coming to Rameswaram as well. Our
itinerary looks like this:
Departure from Chennai on 14th, 8 PM or so.
Arrival in Rameswaram on 15th, 8 AM or so.
Observe eclipse from some random beach on 15th.
Stay over on 15th night doing some observation (and maybe some
astrophotography)
Leave back on 16th evening to Chennai.
Any interesting thing going on in Kalpakkam these days ? Because we are going there this week..
Warm regards,
Rama

Almost all the trains between Blr-Rameshwaram, blr-chennai,
chennai-rameshwaram, blr-madurai are full around 15Jan (it is a festival and
weekend time)!
Now it is 90 days in advance and not 60 days! We are already too late (but
not very late i hope).
If you people are ready we can book our own cab/Tempo-traveller.
As per my earlier plan of visiting Kalpakkam, it may come around 2k for
travelling around per head! Any more suggesstions, pls hurry up.

We highly request all of you to sign up (even though you'll be on your own for the most part), so that we can coordinate things to the extent that we can. Although we don't intend to take up any responsibility of organizing anything as of now, we *might* be able to work something out later. Strength in numbers will be helpful.
Vivek will also post a formal announcement for the convenience of those who don't read replies.

Don't forget B'lore -> Trichy -> Rameshwaram as well. And there's always Tatkal. Buses to Madurai will be aplenty. No calamity or cause for panic as of now.
